Challenge

Completion of the entire multi-disciplinary London to Corby (L2C) Capacity Improvement and Electrification Project (£1.2Bn) was under threat. Essential to the project’s success, the Earthing and Bonding (E&B) workstream lacked focus, causing the completion date to drift. Until the E&B works completed commissioning of the L2C could not continue. As available float in the L2C schedule was rapidly being used up, delay to the entire project looked likely.

Perspicacity Consult was engaged to bring the E&B workstream back on track and mitigate any delay to the wider project.

Our Approach

  • Identified and mapped the elements of this sub-project, their dependencies and the personnel responsible for their management and delivery.
  • Oversaw creation of a recovery programme which included interfacing dependancies.
  • Liaised with all parties (track, stations, signalling, power & distribution) to understand the issues including missing project controls elements.
  • Upgraded the general project controls tracking spreadsheet targeting improved visibility of the earthing and bonding workstream progress and oversaw changes to the management dashboard (using MS Power BI) circulated to Senior Managers so they also could clearly see an accurate picture of.
  • Undertook resourcing analysis and organised additional resource to enable delivery to the agreed programme.
  • Organised and ran a weekly meeting to monitor progress, manage cross-discipline issues and ensure accountability for and mitigation of programme slippage.

Outcome

Improved schedule management by the contractor and improved visibility of performance for the client organisation which led to completion of the works in time to avoid delay to the overall project.
